Happy Birthday, Henrik Ibsen! 20 March 1828

     Ibsen's influence on the modern stage is enormous. While associated with Norway, he lived abroad for many years, and composed his greatest works far from the fjords (I could not resist).

     In 7th grade music class I came to know Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite, and by my senior year was aware of A Doll's House and Hedda Gabler, with their proto-feminism. Well-respected in Norway during his life, his renown has increased in the century-plus since his death.
